Port Elizabeth is one of the fastest growing operations in the Greystones stable, with a container terminal operation (supplying service to SAPO), car terminal, ore berth, and general cargo operations.
Car Terminal
We have established a good reputation at the car terminal, with on time secure and reliable service. With close co-operation between ourselves, SAPO terminal staff, Motor Industry, and shipping lines we supply a world class service.
We supply services directly to the major motor vehicle manufacturers in the Eastern Cape and to the Shipping Lines that call in the Port.
Discharge operations run at an average of +- 130 moves/hour across all lines
Loading operations vary from between 110 to 140 vehicles per hour. Absolute hourly productivity records are 210 cars per hour on discharge, and 170 cars per hour on loading.
While records are nice to achieve, our focus is rather on quality, ensuring that both our clients and their clients receive cars in pristine condition.
Our focus on service delivery means that our clients are able to ask questions and expect to get answers that they can rely on at almost any time of the night and day.
Personal supervision, willingness to perform the unusual or unexpected and a "can do" attitude are the hallmark of the Greystones operation in PE.
Container Operations
The container terminal follows the rest of the ports in providing services to SAPO. Because we are a smaller operation, the degree of co-operation and interaction between Greystones and SAPO is perhaps that much closer than other ports. Volume wise, PE is the smaller of the container terminals, with Greystones handling around 18 - 20% of the terminal volumes of +-20 000 TEUs per month.
Reefer monitoring is an area where we have a low key but quite successful operation, supplying services to one of the major liners calling PE. Using reporting systems developed in-house, we are able to provide a personalised service to the clients.
Container stuffing is another area of expertise, particularly loading and securing motor cars for export. This work is carried out as a sub-contractor to SAPO, and our reputation for attention to detail has led to periodic requests to provide assistance to the main motor vehicle manufacturers in the Eastern Cape.
General Cargo
General cargo operations are a small part of our business, although we intend to grow this in keeping with the corporate strategy. We at present handle a couple of fishing vessels (factory trawler), and cargoes vary from fishmeal to frozen tuna and ships supplies. We also offer Off Port Limits services to agents, with several of our staff having earned their sea legs.
Manganese ore is exported through the antiquated ore plant (commissioned in 1953), and 2005 has seen world uptake of the product dropping off. We expected to handle +- 800 000 m/t for the 2005 year.
Greystones Cargo Systems are driven to develop business for the new Port of Ngqura and the Coega Development Corporation.
